  • Who are the Academic Advisors?

    valfordVeronica Alford is the Manager of Articulation and Transfer Services.
    She has a B.A. degree from Fisk University,(An HBCU) ), and a Master’s degree from George Washington University. Veronica was an advisor for thirty years (that’s a lot of advising) prior to becoming Transfer Manager. She loves transfer, but she also loves woodworking and crafting with rubber stamps. She coordinates our programs with all Maryland four-year state schools, and she modestly claims to be an expert on the LEP Business Program at UMCP., She can help you to select the specific courses at PGCC that will fit precisely with the major you have selected at your transfer school in Maryland. She can help with your transfer plans even to private institutions and out of state colleges and universities, but guarantees cannot be made for those schools as they can be for Maryland state Universities.

    BDoughertyBarbara Dougherty was an admissions counselor at Fordham University and Director of Admissions at The Canterbury School in Connecticut. She has been an advisor at Prince George’s Community College for more than fifteen years. Her Bachelor’s degree and M.B.A. were earned at Fordham University. Barbara works in all areas of advising, but she specifically works with University of Maryland University College to help facilitate our students’ transfer there. In her leisure time, Barbara does beautiful stained glass work, but she is equally expert and interested in helping you with your transfer plans. She facilitates our ARTSYS transfer workshops and is our resident expert on the LEP Engineering programs at UMCP. Speak to her about the new statewide ASE Engineering Program.

    ccaldwellCandice Caldwell welcomes new and returning students and can help them identify their academic goals. She loves to work with students interested in career exploration, and is always ready to advise about transfer. Candice is one of a few who advise students in our Nursing and Allied Health Programs. She received her A.A.S. from Massachusetts Bay Community College, B.A. from Lesley College and M.A. from Trinity University. She is especially knowledgeable about transfer to Howard University and also facilitates our “Special Day” transfer workshops. She coordinates our Allied Health and Nursing Day, Business Transfer Day and Criminal Justice Transfer Day Programs. Every year she seems to add a new special day program.

    Some advisors are specifically assigned to work with transfer, but all advisors are skilled in helping with your transfer needs.

     
    rRazaviDr. Reyhan Razavi brings a wealth of advising experience to the transfer area. She received a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology/Counseling in her native country of Iran. She earned a Master’s degree in Education/Counseling and her Doctorate degree in Higher Education/International Multicultural from George Washington University. She began her career in Education in Iran and has worked at Prince George's Community College for more than fifteen years. If you want to converse in Farsi (Persian), Arabic and/or English, she is the advisor for you. She also is one of our advisors specifically authorized to work with our Nursing and Allied Health students. She’s very knowledgeable about these programs and can sign you into the initial courses that have selective admission requirements. We feel privileged to have her. She is very knowledgeable about the transfer relationship PGCC has with Morgan State University and specifically works with students in their CONNECT Program. She is also our contact person for the Coppin Project Focus Program. She can help with all your transfer needs.

    mcookMary Cook was born in North Dakota, but raised in Kansas. She graduated from Johnson County Community College in 1975 and received a B.S. degree in Arabic from Georgetown University. Inspired to work with students, she earned an M.S. degree in Student Personnel and Counseling from Kansas State University. She lived in the Middle East for six years, and worked there as a journalist and ESL instructor. Mary loves technology and she helps to keep our new advising sign in system working in perfect order.

    EncisoJulie Enciso has a B.S. degree in Health Administration from Northeastern University in Boston and a M.A. in Counseling degree from Hampton University. Julie has worked as a high school guidance counselor in public school systems. Visit her office and you will learn much about Puerto Rico. Julie is fluent in Spanish and loves working with all students, but she has a special interest in working with international students. She is a marathon runner and also enjoys swimming, cycling and skiing. Julie says: “ Bienvenidos a PGCC.”

     

    smallmjMary Jane Coluzzi, “M.J.,” has over 20 years of experience at two Maryland Community Colleges. As the Prince George’s Community College graduation evaluator she reviewed the academic records of each graduation candidate to assure completion of degree and certificate requirements. As an academic advisor, she specializes in the Allied Health and Nursing Programs, but enjoys advising in all programs. M.J. also enjoys teaching students to use the academic planning features of the Owl Link system, Academic Program Evaluation and My Educational Plan. She completed her A.A. in General Studies at Anne Arundel Community College, and her B.A. in Education at Johns Hopkins University. She especially enjoys working with non-traditional adult students.


    As you can see, we have advisors from varied backgrounds. They have hobbies and many outside interests. Several speak more than one language. If you want to speak Arabic, Persian, Spanish, French or maybe some other language, someone is our office can probably help you. Our advisors are interesting, intelligent and caring people. I am sure you can find the right one to help with your transfer needs. Come in to see one of us.
