LARGO, Md. – Prince George’s Community College (PGCC) has been ranked among the top 20 of the best colleges in the country for adult learners by Washington Monthly. The article appears in the magazine’s September/October issue.  PGCC ranked 19 out of the 1,171 community colleges the publication looked at.

According to the publication, this ranking had never been done and sought to find out how four-year and two-year colleges were serving the adult learner. Washington Monthly used data from two federal government sources: the Department of Education’s Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) survey and the department’s new College Scorecard database, which was released last fall.

The data was then combined into seven general measures of the colleges’ openness and responsiveness to adult students and to how well those students fared once they left.  Adult learners tend to have several competing priorities, including full-time jobs and family responsibilities, and because of that, sometimes have trouble fitting day classes into their schedules.  This seems to be the “sweet spot” for community colleges though, so says Washington Monthly, as the community colleges they surveyed garnered the highest scores possible on its ease of transfer and flexibility measures.
