PGCC Student's Article Featured in AACU Journal

LARGO, Md. – Making the decision to re-enroll in college caused Kelly Davidson, 34, to experience anxiety, fear, and shame. She wondered if she had what it took to complete her studies and if people would view her differently because she was a non-traditional student.

Each one of Davidson’s fears dissipated once she registered for classes at Prince George’s Community College and she knew she had made the right decision. Davidson shares her story in the article, “Envisioning My Success,” which was featured in the spring 2013 issue of Peer Review, a quarterly journal published by the Association of American Colleges and Universities.

“My first semester was both challenging and life changing,” Davidson said in the piece. “The curriculum forced me to think more critically about my assignments and life around me.” Davidson went on to say that after meeting with her academic advisor she fully grasped the idea of “envisioning success.”

Davidson, who is majoring in health education and holds a 3.8 GPA, was referencing Envision Success, which is the formal name of the institutional priority and completion agenda at Prince George’s Community College.  Davidson is entering her final year at the institution and said the support she received from the faculty, staff, and programming offered on campus provided her with a full collegial experience. Davidson now serves as president of the Campus Activities Board and is a member of Phi Theta Kappa National Honor Society. 

“Academics coupled with extracurricular activities helped me develop a multidimensional way of viewing the world.” Davidson said. “The programs provided by the Office of College Life Services provided me with the necessary training and hands-on experience to achieve this goal.”

Peer Review is read by more than 6,000 college administrators, faculty, graduate students, and other educators.  The publication provides information on emerging trends and key debates in undergraduate liberal education. Each issue is focused on a specific topic, provides comprehensive analysis, and highlights changing practice on diverse campuses.
