President Dukes Named to AAC&U Board of Directors

LARGO, Md.—President Charlene M. Dukes has been appointed to the Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) board of directors. AAC&U is the leading national association concerned with the quality, vitality and public standing of undergraduate liberal education. Its members are committed to extending the advantages of a liberal education to all students, regardless of academic specialization or intended career. The announcement was made at the organization’s annual meeting in Washington, DC.

“President Dukes has made tremendous contributions to education specifically in the area of student success in community colleges,” says Felix Yeoman, chairman of the Prince George’s Community College Board of Trustees. “She has been a tireless spokeswoman for our students, has led the way for historic business and public school partnerships and has represented Maryland as a White House Champion of Change,” he added.
 

Charlene Dukesbecame president of Prince George’s Community College in 2007. Prior to her appointment, she served for 12 years as vice president for student services at Prince George’s Community College after holding the position of dean of students at the Community College of Allegheny County, Allegheny Campus. She has served on the Prince George’s County Board of Education and was recently appointed by the Governor of Maryland to the State Board of Education. Dukes holds an undergraduate degree in English education from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and earned her master’s and doctoral degrees in administrative and policy studies (with an emphasis on higher education) from the University of Pittsburgh. 

“AAC&U’s membership is very fortunate to be led by such a strong and committed board of directors,” said Carol Geary Schneider, president, AAC&U. “The board’s leadership has contributed greatly to the growth of AAC&U’s membership and the strength of its programs and publications,” she added.

Dukes joins six other educational leaders from a wide array of institutions including Allison Jones, vice president for postsecondary collaboration, Achieve, Inc.; Darcy B. Kelley, Harold Weintraub Professor of Biological Sciences, Columbia University; Holiday Hart McKiernan, vice president, strategic operations and chief of staff, Lumina Foundation for Education; Brian Murphy, president, De Anza College; Elsa Nuñez, president, Eastern Connecticut State University; and Michael S. Roth, president, Wesleyan University.
 

 

Founded in 1915, AAC&U comprises more than 1,250 member institutions including accredited public and private colleges, community colleges and universities of every type and size.
