LARGO, Md. —Donate your time for the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program at Prince George's Community College. Participants will receive training and valuable experience working with the community during tax season. Free tax services are offered to Prince George’s County individuals with disabilities, elderly taxpayers, low and limited income residents and students.
Last year, the VITA program prepared more than 2,000 federal and state tax returns, which resulted in in more than $129,000 in federal and Maryland tax refunds. Residents saved more than $125,000 in tax preparation fees and received free electronic filing of state and federal tax returns and refunds which are issued within 7-10 days with direct deposit.
VITA tax preparers will receive free training and materials as well as an Internal Revenue Service volunteer tax preparer certification. Some participants may qualify to earn college credit. Beginning January 3, volunteers will be required to attend five training days on Tuesdays from 6-9 p.m. or Saturdays from 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Preparers are asked to commit to a minimum of 10 weeks of service. Register to volunteer at http://academic.pgcc.edu/cfc. For more information about VITA, call 301-322-0713 or e-mail email@example.com.
