1098-T FAQs

  • Why did I receive a 1098-T form? 

    In January of each year, the college is required to send a 1098-T form to any student that was enrolled and had qualified tuition billed during the previous calendar year.  The 1098-T serves to alert students that they may be eligible for federal income tax education credits.  This form is informational only.  It should not be considered as tax opinion or advice.  Receipt of Form 1098-T does not indicate eligibility for the tax credit.  To determine the amount of qualified tuition and fees paid, the amount of scholarships and grants received, a taxpayer should use their own records.

    Please note:  It is up to each taxpayer to determine eligibility for the tax credits and how to calculate them.  The college cannot assist you with this information. 

                  

    Why didn’t I receive a 1098-T form? 

    • You previously consented to electronic delivery.
    • You are looking for your 1098-T at the wrong address.   
      • IRS regulations require mailing your 1098-T to your permanent home address.  The college may have several different types of addresses on file for a student.  All 1098-T forms are mailed to the home permanent address on file at the college. It is important to remember to keep your address information up to date.
      • If you filed a change of address with the Post Office, the 1098-T will not be forwarded to the new address.  Instead it will be returned to the college. 
    • If you were enrolled in non-credit courses only, a 1098-T is not issued.  You should use your personal records to determine if you are eligible for any tax credit.

     

    When will the 1098-T form be mailed?  

    The IRS form 1098-T will be mailed no later than February 1st to the student’s permanent home address unless the student consented to receive the form electronically. 

    If you have consented for electronic delivery, you will be able to view and print your 1098-T using Owl Link as soon as the form is available.

     

    Is the information contained on the 1098-T reported to the IRS?  

    Yes. The college is required to electronically report this information to the IRS by February 28th.

     

    How can I get a duplicate/reprint of my 1098-T? 

    You can reprint your 1098-T through your Owl Link account.  Follow the steps below:

    Log in to your Owl Link account

    Select Student Menu 

    Under Financial Information, select the menu item 1098 Electronic Consent  

    Consent to electronic delivery option and click Submit  

     

    Can I get a copy of last year’s 1098-T?  

    Yes, provided that a form was issued to you.  Follow the instructions for electronic delivery, making sure you select the tax year of interest from the list provided. 

     

    How do I consent to receive my 1098-T electronically?

    How do I withdraw my consent to receive my 1098-T electronically?

    Why isn’t there an amount in Box 1? 

    The IRS instructs institutions to report either payments received (Box 1) or amounts billed for qualified tuition and related expenses (Box 2) on the 1098-T.  Once an institution has selected one of these options, they cannot change reporting methods without permission from the IRS.  Box 1 will be empty because PGCC reports qualified tuition and related expenses that were billed during the tax year. 

     

    What educational expenses are considered as qualified tuition and related expenses as reported on Form 1098-T in Box 2? 

    Qualified tuition and related expenses are tuition, registration, instructional service and course specific fees required for attendance or enrollment in a credit course at an eligible educational institution and the expenses were assessed between January 1st and December 31st of that year. 

    An example of amounts not reported on a 1098-T include books, equipment, transportation, student activity fees, late fees, parking fees or other expenses unrelated to an individual’s course of instruction.

                   

    My address on the 1098-T has changed.  Will this affect me when I file my return? 

    No. The address shown on Form 1098-T is irrelevant for IRS income tax filing purposes.  However, you should update your address with Prince George’s Community College.

     

    The name on the 1098-T is incorrect or has been changed, how can I get this corrected? 

    To correct or change your name, you need to complete a Change of Name form at the Admissions and Records Office.  For information requirements for a name change. Once your name has been changed in the college system, contact the Student Accounting Office to request a new corrected 1098-T which will be made accessible through your Owl Link account.

     

    How can I tell if my SSN is correct on the 1098-T I received in the mail? 

    The IRS allows educational institutions to mask the first 5 digits of social security numbers when mailing a 1098-T.  To verify that the correct SSN is being reported please view your 1098-T online using Owl Link. Follow the instructions for electronic delivery.

     

    The SSN/TIN on the 1098-T is incorrect, how do I get this corrected? 

    The SSN/TIN on your 1098-T was obtained from information provided to Prince George’s Community College.  The single most important information on the form is your Social Security Number/Taxpayers Identification Number.  Without your SSN/TIN, PGCC cannot properly report an information return with the IRS.  Your Social Security Number/Taxpayers Identification Number must be correct.

    If you SSN is displayed incorrectly on your 1098-T, go to the Admissions and Records Office at Prince George’s Community College and provide them with an original SSN/TIN card along with proper accompanying photo identification.  Photocopies are not acceptable.

    Once the SSN/TIN has been updated, contact Student Accounting to request a corrected 1098-T.  The corrected form will be available electronically through your Owl Link account.

     

    My 1098-T contains incorrect information, how do I get this corrected? 

    Contact the Student Accounting Office and explain what information you feel is incorrect.  If your 1098-T Form does contain incorrect information, a corrected one will be issued for you.  Once issued, you will be able to access it electronically using your Owl Link account. 

    What if I still have questions regarding the 1098-T? 

    Prince George’s Community College had provided the 1098-T in compliance with IRS guidelines; however, PGCC is unable to answer tax related questions or provide any tax advice on this issue.  Although contact information in provided on IRS Form 1098-T, the individual listed cannot provide you with any additional tax information.
