Student Success Stories

Pamela Thomas

As a mother of three with a full-time job, Pamela Thomas already had a full schedule when she and a friend made a life-changing decision. They had both always wanted to become nurses, and they made a pact to enroll at Prince George’s Community College together to pursue that goal. Despite the significant challenge of juggling family responsibilities and work duties, Ms. Thomas completed her degree and qualified as a registered nurse. After graduating, she held several nursing positions in Washington, D.C. In 2002, she was hired as a nurse at Prince George’s Community College and quickly became coordinator and then manager of the college’s Health Education Center. The center promotes healthy lifestyle choices and disease prevention while providing health counseling and educational and health outreach programs. Ms. Thomas also serves as president of the Prince George’s Community College Alumni Association.

Helping students through tough times can be difficult, but as Ms. Thomas says, “What I give out, I really do get back.” She sees her work as a continuation of her own student experience. “Now that I’m back, I put into practice what was done for me and I see the significance of everyone who comes on campus. When I came through, it was a family-oriented place. People wanted you to succeed. They treated you as if you were valued and you were a significant part of the college community. Everywhere I go, I tell people that Prince George’s Community College is a wonderful place to begin your education.”
