Accreditation Information

The State Board of Individual Tax Preparers qualifies and registers persons seeking to function as individual tax preparers. Tax preparers are required to be registered by the board before providing tax preparation services in the State. To qualify, an individual must be at least age 18, a high school graduate, and pass an examination.

Income Tax Preparation
Do you want to become a registered Income tax Preparer in Maryland or are you interested in saving money by preparing your families taxes?

Income Tax Preparers:   

Interview clients to obtain additional information on taxable income and deductible expenses and allowances.  

Review financial records such as income statements and documentation of expenditures in order to determine forms needed to prepare tax returns.  

Consult tax law handbooks or bulletins in order to determine procedures for preparation of atypical returns 

Prepare or assist in preparing simple to complex tax returns for individuals or small businesses.  

Compute taxes owed or overpaid, using adding machines or personal computers, and complete entries on forms, following tax form instructions and tax tables. 

Check data input or verify totals on forms prepared by others to detect errors in arithmetic, data entry, or procedures.
