American Sign Language (ASL) is the fourth most commonly used language in the U.S. It is the first language of many hearing impaired and one of several communication options available to them.
ASL is a complete, complex language that uses signs made with the hands and other movements, including facial expressions and postures of the body.  Even though ASL is used in the United States, it is a langauge completely separate from English.  It contains all the fundamental features that a language needs to be functional: it has its own rules of grammar, punctuation, and sentence order.
