Swimming Pool Management

Program Summary

People spend much of their leisure time outdoors, often participating in recreational activities centered around swimming pools. Whether it be at a community center, summer camp, theme park, or other tourist attraction with water environments, recreation workers should be outgoing and good at working with people and have the technical proficiency to support the often complicated nature of pool operations.

PGCC’s Swimming Pool Management Program highlights the most important topics in pool operations, maintenance, and safety including circulation, filtration, chemistry, safety and risk management.  It is designed for pool or aquatic facility operators and supervisors who need special education and training in pool operations in order to meet local and/or state health code requirements. It is also ideal for those in the hospitality industry with aquatic facilities as well as for head lifeguards or those who require refresher training.

Employment Trends
  • Opportunities for careers in recreation will continue to grow as more baby boomers retire with more leisure time, higher disposable income, and increasing concern for health and fitness.
  • The recreation field in general offers many part-time and seasonal job opportunities, including schedules in off hours and weekends when the general public can focus on leisure activities.
  • Those individuals willing to start by working flexible hours have the potential to grow into supervisory functions with broader responsibility.
