Telecommunications Cabling

Program Summary

Cabling technicians are the specialized computer hardware engineers that research, design, develop, and test computer hardware during its manufacture and installation. The work of computer hardware engineers is very similar to that of electronics engineers, but, unlike electronics engineers, computer hardware engineers work exclusively with computers and computer-related equipment. The rapid advances in computer technology are largely a result of the research, development, and design efforts of computer hardware engineers. To keep up with technological advances, these technicians must continually update their knowledge.

Changes in technology, government regulation, and market conditions continue to transform the telecommunications industry. Whereas voice telephone communication was once the primary service of the industry, the transmission of a variety of information, including data, graphics, and video, is now commonplace. The widespread installation of fiber optic cables, which transmit light signals along glass strands, permits faster, higher capacity transmissions than those possible with traditional copper wire lines.

Employment Trends
  • Telecommunications includes voice, video, and Internet communications services.
  • With rapid technological changes in telecommunications, those with up-to-date technical skills will have the best job opportunities.
  • Average earnings in telecommunications greatly exceed average earnings throughout private industry.
Program Objectives
  • Successful completion of each course earns a Certificate of Completion
  • Coursework leading to award of a Continuing Education Certificate
