Cisco Networking

Updated: Jul 05

Program Summary

Cisco Systems, Inc. is the worldwide leader in networking for the Internet. Today, networks are an essential part of business, education, government and home communications, and Cisco Internet Protocol-based (IP) networking solutions are the foundation of these networks. Cisco hardware, software, and service offerings are used to create Internet solutions that allow companies to increase productivity and strengthen their competitive advantage.

Cisco offers three levels of general certification representing increasing levels of expertise: Associate, Professional, and Expert (CCIE). Different tracks across these levels align with varying career needs. A variety of focused Cisco Qualified Specialist certifications are available as well to show knowledge in specific technologies, solutions or job roles, such as Routing and Switching, Network Security, and Service Provider.

Prince George’s Community College is a designated Cisco Regional Networking Academy and offers training to prepare students for the Cisco Certified Networking Associate (CCNA) Certification. After satisfactory completion of the training, students are eligible to take the CCNA exam. Workers who hold the CCNA certification are qualified to design, build, and maintain Cisco Local Area Networks.

Employment Trends

  • The CCNA certification is appropriate for anyone interested in starting a career in designing and maintaining computer networks.
  • CCNA training programs are available for individuals with no prior computer networking knowledge. Think of the CCNA as a steppingstone to the CCIE, and the CCNP as an intermediate step between the two.
  • Professionals with the CCIE level of expertise command top salaries. According to a 2001 salary survey total compensation averaged $106,296 for network directors.
  • Once you're certified, you must attend five CCIE-level training sessions and pass a recertification exam every 24 months.
