LARGO, Md.— Prince George’s Community College celebrates Black History Month, highlighting valuable contributions made by people of African descent. The following events are open to the public.
Discuss the impact of Barack Obama being the first African-American president at the ALANA Brown Bag Discussion: A President Who Looks Like Me on Monday, Feb. 9, at 12:30-2:30 p.m., Largo Student Center, Conference Room 2. PGCC in partnership with the Prince George’s County Government Cultural Diversity Committee and the Prince George’s County Health and Human Services Agencies presents Celebrate Black History Month: February 2009, the Quest for Black Citizenship in the Americas on Monday, Feb. 9, 1-3:30 p.m., Largo Student Center, Rennie Forum. Daryl Michael Scott, vice president for programs for the Association for the Study of African American Life and History of Howard University, is the keynote speaker. Omekongo Dinbinga: Spoken Word Performance and Book Signing, a poetry recital and book signing event, is Monday, Feb. 9, 6-8 p.m., Largo Student Center, Rennie Forum. The tri-lingual poet, author, educator, motivational speaker, actor, and publisher is a first-generation Congolese-American. Dibinga’s writings address hip-hop culture, Africans in the media and unique cultural identities.
Prince George's Community College hosts its annual Jook Joint Saturday Night on Saturday, Feb. 14, 7 p.m. to midnight in Largo Student Center, Community Rooms A, B and C. A New Orleans style dinner buffet will be served. Explore African-American music history with the Jewels and Hardway Connection. Admission for Jook Joint Saturday Night is $40. Brush up on your African-American history and play Black History Jeopardy on Thursday, Feb. 19, 1-3 p.m., in Bladen Hall, Room 133. Participate in this interactive game and compete in teams of three or be a part of the audience. Topics include African-American firsts, periods in time and government. Take a Trip to the National Museum of American History on Tuesday, Feb. 24, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Visit the newly renovated museum and all of its amenities.
