17th Annual Bluebird Blues Festival Explores Music History

Workshop Pays Tribute to John Cephas

LARGO, Md.— Prince George's Community College hosts its 17th Annual Bluebird Blues Festival on Sunday, Sept. 13, 12:30-6 p.m. in front of Novak Field House and in the Hallam Theatre of the Queen Anne Fine Arts building on the Largo campus. Free admission to the event provides attendees access to live entertainment, children's activities, food, giveaways and a variety of vendors.

“The Bluebird Blues Festival inspires kinship in Prince George’s County,” said Yvette Galloway, chair of the Bluebird Blues Festival Committee and dean of college life services at the college. “Prince George’s Community College is dedicated to celebrating and supporting the blues. The community looks forward to the festival every year,” she added.

Bobby Parker, the headliner act, will appear on the main stage in front of the Novak Field House. Other performers on the main stage include Terrence McCardle and Jumpin’ Tonight, Ruby Hayes and Whop Frazier. All time favorite Da Gator of WPFW 89.3 FM will emcee on the main stage with NBC4 news anchor Jim Handly.

An educational workshop, led by Barry Pearson and hosted by XM Radio’s Bill Wax on the Nap Turner stage in the Queen Anne Fine Arts building, provides visitors with a history of blues music. The workshop pays tribute to John Cephas who passed away in March. Former Cephas partner Phil Wiggins is a featured musician along with Corey Harris, Jeffrey Scott and Darryl Davis.

The Bluebird Blues Festival is sponsored by Prince George's Community College, Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission and the Office of the Prince George's County Executive.
