What is Student Support Services-TRIO?

Student Support Services-TRiO (SSS) is a comprehensive, federally-funded program that offers academic coaching to students in need of scholarly support to accomplish their educational and career goals at Prince George’s Community College (PGCC). SSS provides assistance at every stage of undergraduate education, whether the student is deciding which courses to take in the first semester or wondering how to prepare for graduation and transfer to the university. We provide intensive academic, personal, and career counseling to help under-served students reach their goals. If students are committed to achieving their academic goals, they will find great benefits in SSS.

Who is eligible to join Student Support Services-TRiO?

Services are available to all U.S. citizens or permanent residents who are registered in credit classes at PGCC, whose academic goals include graduation and/or transferring to a university AND meet at least one of the following criteria:

  • Limited-Income Student – A family’s taxable income does not exceed levels set by the federal government which can be found at www.ed.gov/about/offices/list/ope/trio/incomelevels.html, if the student is receiving any type of public assistance, or if the student is receiving Social Security Income (SSI), Social Security Disability Income (SSDI), or Vocational Rehabilitation funding.
  • First-Generation College Student – This implies that the student’s custodial parent or guardian does not possess a four-year college degree or if the student has ever been a ward of the state or homeless.
  • Disabled Student – The student must have documentation on file and be registered with the PGCC’s Disability Support Services.
  • Openings are limited and preference is given to students who meet the limited income levels requirement AND are first-generation or disabled.

    What is Academic Coaching?

Academic coaching is a unique, specialized service, geared towards helping individuals reach their education potential. This service proves helpful as it enhances structure and accountability while providing new study strategies, better organization and time management skills and general moral support.  The student meets with an Academic Coach at least two times each semester and attends academic skills workshops that are geared toward improving grade point average, identifying and pursuing academic goals, developing effective study habits, reducing test anxiety, and balancing college life with life’s demands.

    What services does SSS provide?

Tutoring and Supplemental Instruction - free one-on-one instruction in most academic courses. The tutor works with the student in a manner suitable to meet individual needs for an entire semester. Supplemental instruction is also a free service. The tutor attends the class with the students, facilitates a question and answer session after each class, and provides, in a group setting, supplemental instruction to enhance the course lecture.

Academic Advising - help in understanding and meeting the academic requirements of your declared major. Assistance with course selection, scheduling, registration, and using the College catalog is provided by your Coach who is committed to your success.

Financial Aid Advising - help in applying for and maintaining eligibility for student financial aid and scholarship programs.

    Counseling
    - assistance in clarifying educational and career goals and meeting the demands of college life. You can also get help with solving personal problems or discussing personal concerns that may be affecting academic progress.

Transfer Assistance - assistance in preparing for transfer to four-year colleges and universities. Obtain help in selecting a college by participating in campus visits.

Cultural Enrichment - Cultural enrichment activities are a regular feature each semester with trips in previous years to...
