Eligibility for Admission
Admissions to Prince George's Community College is open to:
- All high school graduates.
Any person with high school equivalency certificates or equivalency diplomas.
- Any person 16 years of age or older who has permanently left elementary or secondary school according to the policies defined by the County Board of Education.
- Underage students identified as “talented and gifted” in accordance with state law and college procedure.
- Other high school junior and senior students who meet criteria for concurrent enrollment, as established by the college in coordination with the County Board of Education.
Admission for First Time Students
1. While Prince George's Community College processes admissions continually year round, students are encouraged to submit their application for admission at least three months prior to the semester in which they plan to begin.
2. Students under the age of 21 must also submit an official high school transcript or General Education Diploma (GED). Persons under 18 who are not high school graduates must provide a letter from the appropriate educational authority verifying permanent withdrawal from the school system. NOTE: Applicants seeking entry into any health technology program must provide a complete transcript, copy of the high school diploma, or GED.
3. All first time students are required to take the college’s placement test prior to registering for courses. There is no need to study for this examination as it tests your general knowledge and helps determine those classes for which you are eligible. Some students may need to begin by taking courses for developmental skills such as math or English.
The application is valid for one year from the date of submission. Notification regarding admission status typically takes less then two weeks.
Readmission for Former PGCC Students
After an absence of two or more years, a former student must complete a new Application for Admissions . Readmitted students do not need to re-test or resubmit transcripts.
Admission for Transfer Students
Students transferring from another college or students with prior college credit must complete and submit the Application for Admission. As some transfer students may be exempt from taking PGCC’s placement tests, they may:
1. Complete and submit a Request for Transfer Evaluation form, available from the Admissions and Records Office, and, then, contact those institutions referenced to send official transcripts sent directly to the Admissions and Records Office for evaluation by the Transfer Evaluator.
2. To expedite course registration for the first semester, the student must also provide unofficial copies of grade reports or transcripts to the academic advisor.
Admission for Non-Degree-Seeking Applicants
Some students may want to take a single course or a short series of courses without intending to a complete a two-year degree. These students must also submit an Application for Admission, but in field “Curriculum Code,” they should enter "990." As is the case for all students, non-degree seekers must also meet all prerequisites for the course(s) they wish to take either through testing or proof of prior college work.
Admission for International Applicants
PGCC welcomes international students that are not US citizens providing that they are permanent residents with proof of status or have a valid F-1 Visa.
In addition to the procedures defined above, non-citizens who are permanent residents must:
1. Apply for admission and submit proof of status to the Admissions and Records Office using an alien registration card, a valid visa, or a permanent resident card.
2. If the applicant’s native language is other than US English, he/she arrange for English proficiency testing through the college's Student Assessment Center.
In addition to the procedures defined above, non-citizens who have F-1 Visas must:
1. Apply for admission him/herself in person or through delivery by the US Postal System, or by independent courier (e.g., UPS, Federal Express, DHL, etc.) from the applicant's current address, without third-party intervention. Sponsors, relatives, friends, etc., cannot complete and/or submit the application on the student's behalf.
2. Apply for admission as a degree-seeking students using the special Application for F-1 Students with appropriate documentation.
3. If the applicant’s native language is other than US English, he/she arrange for English proficiency testing through the college's Student Assessment Center.
4. The time frame for admissions must comply with the schedule below:
- May 1 for Fall Semester registration,
- October 1 for Spring Semester registration
- February 1 for Summer Semester registration
5. Students on an F-1 Visa will receive a Letter of Admission (Form I-20) that specifies the date by the student must be tested. It is essential for the student to meet this deadline as noncompliance is grounds to be denied admission.
6. Please note that F-1 students who wish to pay tuition and fees money directly to the college from an overseas financial institution are limited to a per semester amount of $4,300. Checks greater than this amount this will not be accepted. Refunds due will be issued in accordance with standard college policy.
No SAT or ACT scores? You can earn a college degree from Prince George's Community College and then transfer to a four year college to pursue a bachelor's degree without them.
