Adult Education Programs
Program Summary
Prince George's Community College offers classes to help adults develop life skills and basic knowledge necessary to speak, understand, read and write English, enhance their participation as community members, and succeed in the workplace. Classes to prepare for the General Educational Development (GED) Tests and External Diploma Program are also available.
Adult Basic Education & GED Preparation
The Adult Basic Education Program offers Basic Reading and GED Preparation classes. Enrollment is based on the results of a placement test so that learners will be placed in the appropriate class for their level.
- Basic Reading classes are for adults who need basic instruction in reading and writing.
- Pre-GED classes are for adults who need more practice in reading, writing and math skills. Pre-GED classes help learners develop the skills needed to transition to GED classes.
- GED classes are for adults who are preparing to take the GED Tests and need to review their skills. Classes focus on reading, writing, and math problem solving skills.
PGCC also offers two accelerated GED programs which, in some cases, can be completed in a shorter amount of time. The GED Fast Track Program is an intensive GED preparation program for qualified adults who can attend class 20 hours a week in the afternoons. The GED Intensive Preparation Program is designed for qualified young adults ages 16-18 who can attend class 10-12 hours a week. Classes focus on reading, writing and math skill development, and test preparation. Enrollment in this program may require attendance at an evening orientation. For more information on either program, call 301-322-0891.

The GED Tests are a high school equivalency exam leading to a Maryland High School Diploma. To take the tests, individuals must be at least 16 years of age, officially withdrawn from school for at least three months (unless granted a waiver), not a high school graduate, and a resident of Maryland for at least three months at the time of testing. GED classes are not required before taking the GED Tests, however, preparation is strongly recommended as readiness is different for each person. Ways to prepare include:
- Attending pre-GED and GED preparation classes
- Studying a GED preparation books which are available at the public library and bookstores
- Taking the Official GED Practice Tests
- Using online or televised preparation tools
For more information on the GED Tests, including preparation options, test centers, and waivers or to request an application, visit the Maryland State Department of Education's GED Information Page (www.gogedgo.org) or call 410-767-0538.
External Diploma Program
The External Diploma Program (EDP) is a nationally recognized, alternative diploma program for adults who have significant life experience and can demonstrate essential academic competencies and life skills. Enrollees earn a Maryland State High School Diploma by developing a portfolio which demonstrates mastery of the required skills. To enroll in this fee-based program, individuals must attend an information session and pass a screening test. For more information and to schedule an appointment for an information session, call 301-322-0891.
