Computer Application Software

Updated: Jun 05

Employment Trends

  • Computer software engineers are projected to be one of the fastest growing occupations over the 2002–12 period.
  • Highly favorable opportunities are expected for college graduates with a degree in computer engineering or computer science and with practical work experience.
  • Computer software engineers must continually strive to acquire new skills in conjunction with the rapid changes in computer technology.

 Program Summary

As the reliance on technology continues to expand in offices across the Nation, the role of the office professional has greatly evolved. Office automation and organizational restructuring have led secretaries and administrative assistants to assume a wider range of new responsibilities once reserved for managerial and professional staff. Many secretaries and administrative assistants now provide training and orientation for new staff, conduct research on the Internet, and operate and troubleshoot new office technologies. In the midst of these changes, however, their core responsibilities have remained much the same—performing and coordinating an office’s administrative activities, and storing, retrieving, and integrating information. Knowledge of application software is key to the effective performance of these operations.

PGCC awards a Continuing Education Certificate to students who successfully complete a series of eight noncredit computer courses at the college. To receive the Continuing Education Certificate, a student must take four core courses and four additional computer courses. The award is designed to recognize the student's achievement at the college in gaining knowledge in the use of computers for business and personal applications.

 Program Objectives

  • Successful completion of each course earns a Certificate of Completion
  • Coursework leading to award of a Continuing Education Certificate

NOTE: The completion of any one of the “Career Track” Continuing Education classes will count toward the basic computer Continuing Education Certificate as completion of three computer classes: (Introduction to Personal Computers, Windows, and one applications class.)
