In an emergency, report the condition and location of any person that may be unable to leave the building or area to staff, faculty, and emergency personnel.

People who have various visual, mobility, and other physical challenges may require additional assistance during an emergency evacuation. In an emergency, report the condition and location of any person that may be unable to leave the building or area to staff, faculty, and emergency personnel.

Individuals needing evacuation assistance during an emergency situation should take the following into consideration:

  • If you cannot evacuate on your own, proceed to the nearest Emergency Call Box, push the button, report your location, and wait for evacuation assistance.
  • Please note in some emergency situations it may take a few moments for a response.
  • If on the first floor, you may also proceed to the exterior area via the nearest exit.
  • You may also contact the Department of Public Safety Emergency Communications Center at 301-546-0111 and inform the Emergency Communications Operator (ECO) of your exact location and what type of assistance you will need to get out of the building. The ECO will notify the appropriate authorities.
  • Evacuation chairs and accessible lifts are available throughout the Center for Performing Arts to be used to assist with evacuating the building. Trained personnel will assist with this type of evacuation. (Future evacuation chair locations for installation in FY24 and forward.)
  • If possible, ask another person if they are willing to accompany you to the Assembly Area or a stairwell to ensure that emergency personnel or building security are aware of your exact location.
  • Report the condition and location of any other persons unable to leave the building or area or who may need the assistance of emergency personnel.
  • Emergency personnel and building security are instructed to check the Assembly Areas/Areas for Assisted Rescue and all exit corridors and stairwells for any stranded persons.
