Prince George’s Community College Partners with Prince George’s County Public Schools for Student Media Day

K-12 to post-secondary pipeline program equips next generation of media professionals

Student Media Day session

LARGO, Md. (November 24, 2021) –

PGCC-TV, Prince George’s Community College’s award-winning studio, partnered with Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS) on November 18 for its annual Student Media Day. The signature event invites middle and high school students interested in media careers to the College to participate in experiential learning, where they are equipped to become the next generation of media professionals. Approximately 500 students participated in this year’s event.

“PGCC-TV is proud to partner with PGCPS to present Media Day,” said Dr. Angela Mathis, manager of PGCC-TV and part-time faculty member. “Since we couldn’t be in person this year, we developed a curriculum that included a video challenge for students enrolled in media arts classes at their middle school or high school.”

“We work with teachers to evaluate student video entries and teach students how to anchor a news magazine that showcases their videos. It is our hope that the students who participate in Media Day will consider enrolling in Prince George’s Community College’s mass comm program, where they can take advantage of our state-of-the-art studios and learn from media professionals who are faculty here,” she added.

Prior to the event, in partnership with PGCPS, PGCC-TV guided students through a video challenge that required them to research and brainstorm, write and edit a script, create a shot list, record and edit video, log clips, incorporate graphics, and more.

During Media Day, students presented their final videos via livestream to their peers, teachers, and Prince George’s Community College faculty and staff. This year’s Media Day programming also included a panel discussion led by breakthrough filmmaker and producer Jimmy Jenkins, as well as a college fair.

“What inspired me to be a change in the world was seeing that a lot of kids in the world don’t have role models, and they tend to go down the wrong path without role models,” said Mikhai, a 12th- grade student at Frederick Douglass High School who participated in Media Day. He shared that his biggest takeaway from the event was “seeing that you can be a change in the world and be leaders in different ways.”

“PGCC-TV staff is comprised of television producers and K-12 media arts teachers,” explained Dr. Mathis. “Media Day is a perfect opportunity for PGCC-TV staff to actively engage with middle and high school students who have a passion for video production.”

PGCC-TV is an award-winning studio and educational access channel available to more than 750,000 cable subscribers in Maryland. The studio has one of the newest and largest high-definition production facilities in the Washington metropolitan area.

Students studying mass communication at Prince George’s Community College have access to all that PGCC-TV has to offer. Students are involved in learning video production, from on-location shoots to live studio tapings and control room operations.
