Next Step aims to equip students with skills, experiences, and practices needed to advance their careers and wages.

Next Step Training and Education has been in existence since 2001 due to funding provided entirely by the local Department of Social Services (DSS), headed by Gloria Brown Burnett, Director. Clients' receiving Temporary Cash Assistance (TCA) and foster youth are referred to Next Step with a primary goal of earning marketable skills and degrees leading to gainful employment.

After receiving an approved application from DSS, Next Step staff welcomes new applicants to quarterly orientation sessions held at Prince George's Community College. After orientation, each student is required to complete three additional enrollment steps which include

  1. Completion of two online career assessments,
  2. Participation in a group session with a professional career counselor and
  3. Creation of an Individual Development Plan.

When the four enrollment steps are completed, new applicants are then eligible to participate in Next Step workshops and receive funding to assist with tuition payments, books, transportation and other services as needed.
