What do I need to do to begin the CNA Theory?

First, take the reading placement test and get a score of 230 or better. (If you have already taken a reading comprehension test at the College, we can review and accept scores that meet or exceed the requirement. To see if you qualify for an exemption, bring or email your unofficial transcript of college credits. You do not need to send us an official transcript if you have taken the placement test at Prince George's Community College (PGCC).

What do I need to do to begin the CNA Clinical?

Before attending clinicals, each student must have uploaded all required documents to CastleBranch, have a valid (unexpired) CPR card, and be in good standing in the CNA Theory class.

  • I had a criminal background check done for another job. Can I use that? No.
  • I had a misdemeanor or felony in the past. Can I join the program? Yes. To determine eligibility for licensure, the Maryland Board of Nursing will review each case individually but not until the end of the training program. The Board will request documentation at that time. The Board will not let you know if they will approve your case before classes.

Where do I go for CNA clinicals?

All students go to clinicals with a PGCC CNA instructor. The clinicals are held in long-term care facilities close to the location of the CNA Theory classes. Each CNA Theory has an assigned clinical, which you must take. The schedule for clinicals may vary from the CNA Theory class schedule.

Do I have to wear a uniform?

The uniform is not needed for CNA Theory but is required for clinicals. Students wear white scrubs and white shoes.

I was a CNA, but my license has expired. Do I need to take the entire program again?

Yes. If the license has been expired for more than 24 months, you must retake the entire program. If your license has been expired for less than 24 months, you should contact the Maryland Board of Nursing.

I have not attended school in many years. What do I need to do to be successful?

Many of our students are returning to the classroom after many years. All students must spend dedicated time studying and practicing outside the classroom.

Do I have to take a state exam?

Students who want to work in long-term care must take the state exam, but those who will work in other facilities do not have to take it. We recommend all students take the state exam because it provides more opportunities for new CNAs and is needed for reciprocity to the District of Columbia, Virginia, and many other states.

Who do I contact to register for the state exam?

You will need to register through Credentia in order to complete the two-part state exam.

Where can I get more information?

Please email wdcehealthcare@pgcc.edu or call 301-546-0745.

Do you offer job placement?

No. However, we do provide a list of local hospitals and facilities where you can seek employment. The College also has a Career Development and Internships Office that assists students with resumes, interview skills, and job referrals. You may also access the College Central Network.

Is there an attendance policy?

Yes. All students are required to attend all classes. In the event of an emergency, please inform the instructor to see if and how that class can be made up in another class.

What percentage or grade is needed to pass the CNA Theory course?

An average of 80% is needed to pass the course.

Is there an orientation?
