PEPCO AWARDS PRINCE GEORGE’S COMMUNITY COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP GRANT FOR STUDENTS SEEKING CAREERS IN ENERGY

LARGO, Md. (June 26, 2020) – Prince George’s Community College (PGCC) received a $100,000 grant this week from Pepco to support students seeking careers in energy and related fields. The grant is part of Pepco’s Community Scholars program.

The scholarship grant to PGCC is one of three awarded to local colleges and universities for the 2020-2021 academic year. Scholarship grants also went to The University of the District of Columbia and Montgomery College. The scholarships will support students as gap funding, and the institutions receiving the grants will make award decisions based on students’ financial needs and pursuit of degrees in energy-related fields.

“The Pepco Community Scholars Program is making college affordable for our students,” said Dr. Charlene M. Dukes. “This program will provide financial support to help students meet their educational goals and encourage them to make a difference in their communities. We’re proud to partner with Pepco and provide this opportunity to our students.”

“The COVID-19 pandemic has caused significant impacts to individuals, families, and communities across the area, highlighting inequities in access to resources and support systems for many residents and businesses,” said Dave Velazquez, president and CEO of Pepco Holdings. “These grants will help ensure our local students can continue their studies and achieve their dreams.”

Pepco is awarding a total of  $400,000 in scholarship grants. In addition to helping students with their educational costs, the grants are also expected to help ensure a sustainable local pipeline of talent for the utility company and a workforce that is prepared for future careers in energy and related sectors.
