Prince George’s Community College Partners with Global Giving Tuesday Campaign

College celebrates the power of collective community and engagement

Students participate in Giving Tuesday campaign

LARGO, Md. (November 24, 2020) – Prince George’s Community College (PGCC) has partnered with Giving Tuesday, a global day of giving that harnesses the collective power of individuals, communities, and organizations to encourage philanthropy and celebrate generosity. Held annually in the United States on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, and after the widely recognized shopping events Black Friday and Cyber Monday, this year’s campaign takes place on Dec. 1.

Funds raised during the Prince George’s Community College Giving Tuesday campaign support the College’s Owl Emergency Response Fund, which was launched by the Prince George’s Community College Foundation to help students overcome immediate and emerging educational needs and hardships that pose barriers to academic success. Since spring 2020, the start of the coronavirus pandemic, the Owl Emergency Response Fund has raised $374,662 in support of more than 2,500 individuals.

“Each year, we are excited to participate in Giving Tuesday because the campaign aligns with our mission as a community college to provide access and opportunity to all who seek to learn through our shared efforts,” said Brenda Mitchell, executive director of the Prince George’s Community College Office of Institutional Advancement. “Our ability to be successful as an institution has always been contingent on the generous support of so many partners, and I’m confident that our College community will step up again this year and make us PGCC proud,” she added.

Giving Tuesday was launched in 2012 as a simple idea: a day to encourage people to do good. Over the past seven years, this idea has grown into a global movement that inspires hundreds of millions to give, collaborate, and celebrate generously. Prince George’s Community College employees, students, alumni, and partners are encouraged to show their solidarity by participating in the campaign.

Prince George’s Community College has a rich history of providing affordable, high-quality learning experiences for diverse populations. The College serves the greatest percentage of non-white credit students in the state of Maryland, with 68% of students identifying as Black and 13% identifying as Hispanic. According to the latest data, 51% of Prince George’s Community College students identify as “first-generation.”

Underrepresented students at Prince George’s Community College and around the country often encounter increased challenges and barriers to academic success, which have been heightened during COVID-19. Campaigns like Giving Tuesday provide a means for much-needed resources and support systems to be directed toward positive student outcomes.
