Prince George’s Community College Raises $13,541 on Giving Tuesday in Support of Students Students at tabling event

LARGO, Md. (December 7, 2020) – Prince George’s Community College (PGCC) partnered with Giving Tuesday, a global day of giving that harnesses the collective power of individuals, communities, and organizations to encourage philanthropy and celebrate generosity, on Dec. 1. The College raised $13,541 in support of students, with 72% of the total dollars raised coming from faculty and staff.

Funds raised during the Prince George’s Community College Giving Tuesday campaign support the College’s Owl Emergency Response Fund, which was launched by the Prince George’s Community College Foundation to help students overcome immediate and emerging educational needs and hardships that pose barriers to academic success. Since spring 2020, the start of the coronavirus pandemic, the Owl Emergency Response Fund has raised $374,662 in support of more than 2,500 individuals.

“We’re grateful for the generosity of the entire College community who once again stepped up to make our Giving Tuesday campaign a success,” said Brenda Mitchell, executive director of the Prince George’s Community College Office of Institutional Advancement. “More than ever during this time, our students are counting on us. The overwhelming support of so many who believe in our mission speaks volumes and inspires us to continue this important work,” she added.

Held annually in the United States on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, and after the widely recognized shopping events Black Friday and Cyber Monday, Giving Tuesday was launched in 2012 as a simple idea: a day to encourage people to do good. Over the years, this idea has grown into a global movement that inspires hundreds of millions to give, collaborate, and celebrate generously.
