LARGO, Md. (March 31, 2021) – Prince George’s Community College (PGCC) announced today that its Medical Assisting associate degree program is now accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). The initial accreditation serves as an important milestone in terms of student outcomes, allowing increased employment and advancement opportunities.

The recent peer review conducted by the Medical Assisting Education Review Board (MAERB) and CAAHEP’s board of directors recognized the program’s substantial compliance with nationally established accreditation Standards, and commended the College’s commitment to continuous quality improvement in education.

“Accreditation from CAAHEP assures students that our program meets specific educational standards in preparing them for the medical assisting profession,” said Angela Anderson, dean of Health, Wellness, and Hospitality at the College. “These credentials are a testament to the quality and rigor of our program that prepares students to enter one of the fastest-growing industries and become leaders in their fields.”

The Maryland Department of Labor projects a 31% increase in medical assisting positions over the next 10 years. Medical assistants are the only multi-skilled allied health specialists professionally trained to work in ambulatory settings. Prince George’s Community College’s Medical Assisting program prepares students for a range of careers in the health care field, including positions in physician offices, outpatient clinics, in-patient administration, government, and insurance agencies. The curriculum is designed to provide experiential learning opportunities that equip students for careers immediately upon graduation in leading allied health fields throughout the region.

Accreditation standards are established by CAAHEP, MAERB, American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA), American Medical Technologists (AMT), and National Healthcareer Association (NHA). The College’s next program evaluation is scheduled for spring 2026.
