Prince George's Community College and Employ Prince George's to Co-Host Free COVID-19 Economic Recovery Job and Resource Fair on May 25
More than 100 local businesses will participate
LARGO, Md. (May 19, 2022) – Prince George's Community College and Employ Prince George's (EPG) are co-hosting a free COVID-19 Economic Recovery Job and Resource Fair in the Charlene M. Dukes Student Center at the College's Largo campus on May 25, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The event is designed to help residents and businesses overcome the economic impact of the pandemic, which closed thousands of local companies and left more than 100,000 residents out of work.
The EPG COVID-19 Workforce Development Recovery Program is now helping unemployed residents restart previous careers and develop new skills to secure higher-wage employment while guiding others as they transition into new career paths.
"Employ Prince George's has been a long-standing partner of PGCC's TeamBuilders Academy and the College overall with funding support to expand education and training opportunities for the unemployed and underemployed residents of Prince George's County," said John Deadwyler, workforce, continuing education, and business development coordinator for the College's TeamBuilders Academy, Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship.
"The DC Metropolitan Region has more job opportunities posted now than pre-pandemic," said Walter L. Simmons, president and chief executive officer of Employ Prince George's. "The struggle today is connecting these opportunities to the job seekers. Employ Prince George's quarterly job fairs will traverse Prince George's County to ensure these connections are made, and it's only right to partner with a dynamic institution such as Prince George's Community College."
More than 100 local companies and programs will participate in the Job and Resource Fair. Those with the most openings include The Arc of Prince George's County, Giant Food, U.S. Postal Service, Maryland National Capital Park & Planning Commission, MGM Resorts International, U.S. Navy, Associated Builders and Contractors of Metro Washington, and Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission.
Prince George's County residents are encouraged to attend if they seek meaningful employment, are interested in a new career path, or want to find out about available job and training opportunities.
In December 2021, there were 15,172 job openings in Prince George's County, compared to 13,519 in October 2020, a 12% increase in vacancies. The industries with the most job openings were health care and social assistance (18%); professional, scientific, and technical services (17%); retail trade (8%), accommodation and food services (7%); and educational services (5%).
