Prince George's Community College Students Participate in Annual Student Advocacy Day
LARGO, Md. (February 1, 2024) Community college students across Maryland have come together for Student Advocacy Day, an annual event sponsored by the Maryland Association of Community Colleges (MACC) that provides constituents direct access to elected officials. Students also advocate for state support of community colleges. The 2024 Student Advocacy Day Kickoff will begin at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, February 6, at the Governor Calvert House in Annapolis, MD.
Prince George’s Community College (PGCC) students have participated in Student Advocacy Day for over 17 years, joining other community college students from across the state to advocate and share how community colleges have enriched their futures. This year’s legislative agenda will cover tuition affordability, equitable state funding for Maryland’s public colleges and universities, state-of-the-art classrooms and equipment, innovative training programs, and enhanced student services.
Student Advocacy Day also allows students from each college to meet with legislative officials collectively. Maryland Delegate Nicole Williams of District 22 will host participating students for a meet and greet with the Prince George’s County Delegation in the Prince George’s County House Delegation Room, followed by the formal MACC Student Advocacy Day program on February 6, 2024.
With community college enrollment up by eight percent in Maryland and rising nationwide this year, investment in these institutions is now more critical than ever. Dual enrollment programs and recently passed legislation such as Blueprint for Maryland’s Future—which provides free tuition to dually enrolled high school students—have contributed to these increases, laying the groundwork for the state’s future workforce as most Maryland community college students remain in-state after graduation.
