Medical Office Assistants are on the front line of the health care field, performing the administrative tasks needed in the outpatient and inpatient settings to keep the healthcare office running smoothly. Responsibilities vary by setting, but may include scheduling and managing appointments, using computer operating systems such as EMR and practice management systems to manage office tasks, reviewing and responding to practice correspondence, greeting patients, and answering phones.

Job Outlook

Employment of medical assistants (administration) is projected to grow 16 percent from 2021 to 2031, much faster than the average for all occupations.

 

About 123,000 openings for medical assistants are projected each year, on average, over the decade. The average annual wage for medical assistants (administration ) is $37,190.

Prerequisites Needs
  • Have internet access.
  • Successfully complete the Accuplacer Reading Comprehension Placement Test with a score of 243 or higher; or
    • Provide proof of college credits or cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher for U.S. high school graduates.
    • Transfer credit from other institutions.
    • Recent, high-placement test scores from other institutions.
    • Students may submit any or all of the following, if they are less than five years old:
      • High SAT, ACT, or GED scores.

Credentialing

Students who successfully complete the Medical Office Assistant program will be eligible to take the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA) certification exam.
