A Federal Work-Study (FWS) award provides an opportunity to earn wages through on-campus or off-campus employment with an eligible FWS employer. Funds are not credited to student accounts. Instead, work-study participants receive a biweekly paycheck for hours worked, which should not exceed 20 hours per week. These earnings do not have to be repaid. Hourly wage rates vary depending on the complexity of the work performed. To be considered for FWS, a student must demonstrate financial need, and funds must be available to award. For priority consideration, students must meet the Prince George's Community College priority filing deadline of March 1.

Students interested in participating in FWS should complete the Federal Work-Study Application

Federal Work-Study participants must complete a mandatory two-hour interactive workshop orientation. This orientation is for both new and returning FWS students, regardless of their previous activity with this program.

Purpose of Federal Work-Study

Through student employment, Prince George's Community College (PGCC) is able to offer another option for center-based learning. Work experience adds value to a student's education and, over time, helps develop professional traits that enhance academic and career success. Federal Work-Study gives students the opportunity to serve on the PGCC campus and in local communities, and it helps students develop leadership skills. Those participating in the PGCC Federal Work-Study program may add this work experience to their resume.

Defining Student/Employee Eligibility

Students must demonstrate financial need as determined by the Financial Aid Office. They must be enrolled in a minimum of six credits of classes and maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0 while employed under the Federal Work-Study program. Students who do not meet these guidelines are terminated from their employment immediately. Student employees do not receive university benefits, which may be offered to part-time and full-time employees. Those who do not meet the definition of student employees may seek opportunities for employment through the Office of Human Resources.
